Ergonomics - How heavy can my child's backpack be?

When children start nursery or school, the question often arises: How heavy should or may the backpack be and what do I have to pay attention to as a mother?

The following points will give you a little guide to help you decide what to look out for.

The size of the backpack:

The size should be decided individually according to the height of your child. The proportions of the rucksack should be neither too large nor too small in comparison to the child's height, as this would lead to an uneven distribution of weight. This can lead to poor posture and should therefore be avoided.

For kindergarten: A volume of around 5 liters and a height of around 30 cm are ideal.

- The large children's backpacks from Little Who offer a suitable solution with a volume of 5.5 liters and a height of just under 30 cm

The weight:

To ensure that the backpack is not too heavy for your child, there is a rule of thumb that you can use as a guide. This is: The backpack should not weigh more than 10 %  of your child's body weight.

For kindergarten children, it is advisable to pack the rucksack as light as possible - especially when carrying it for longer periods - and if possible even keep it below the 10% limit. Ideally, the backpack should only weigh up to one kilo.

Example: If your child weighs 20 kg, the packed backpack should weigh a maximum of 2 kg.

Tip: Choose a backpack that is as light as possible. The vegan children's backpacks from Little Who weigh less than 450 g and are therefore particularly suitable.

Ergonomic features:

For an even distribution of weight, you should pay attention to the following ergonomic features:

- Padded, adjustable shoulder straps for comfortable and even weight distribution

- Chest strap to keep the straps in position and distribute the weight stably across the body

Correct use:

In everyday life, parents can make sure that the backpack is always worn on both shoulders to prevent health problems caused by uneven loads. In addition, the backpack should not hang too low on the back, but should be positioned just above the waist.
